VisionBox Description

The TANGO Trakehner is a real-time multi-core machine vision computer with an additional x86 computer combined in a small housing with neither fan, nor heat sink.

The TI real-time computer acquires the images from two camera link connectors. While the image processing application is running with a computing power of up to 160 GFLOPS – 320 GMACS in hard real time, the embedded x86 computer performs services like the HMI, database access or other peripheral functionality.

The name “TANGO” comes from the character of the South American dance. While the man sets the rhythm of the dance and is the leader (that’s the application on the Texas Instruments Multi-core Processor), the woman is responsible for the beauty of the dance and has freedom in the movement (that’s the Windows-based application on the x86 Processor). Just like in the TANGO dance, there is a clear distribution of responsibilities:

The typical application data flow runs like this: Camera data is grabbed into the 4 GByte memory of the TI processor. Up to 8 cores compute the image data and manage the results, which can be transferred via digital I/O, serial interface, high-speed Ethernet or to the x86 computer. The setup of parameters or the representation of a life image on the monitor – these tasks are performed by the embedded x86 computer.
